What to look for when buying a used forklift

What to Look for When Buying a Used Forklift: A Pre-Purchase Inspection Guide

Are you in the market for a used forklift? Buying second-hand equipment can be a cost-effective option, but it also comes with its own set of risks. Without knowing the full history of the forklift, you may be unsure of its safety and reliability. That’s where a pre-purchase inspection comes in.

At Statutory Inspections, we offer thorough examinations conducted by trained and experienced engineers to give you peace of mind when purchasing a used forklift. Our inspections ensure that the truck complies with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations), making sure it is safe and operates smoothly.

What is Covered in a Pre-Purchase Inspection?

Our pre-purchase inspection covers a comprehensive list of checks to ensure the forklift is in good condition. This includes:

  1. Full Inspection of Equipment
Our engineers will conduct a thorough inspection of both the mechanical and electrical components of the forklift. This includes jacking up the truck to check the axles and wheel bearings.

  2. Fluid Levels and Condition
We will check all fluid levels and assess the condition of the fluids. Any signs of “cooking” in the rocker cover will also be noted.

  3. Exhaust System
Our engineers will assess the exhaust fumes and the exhaust system to ensure they are in good working condition.

  4. Wear and Tear
We will check for wear and tear in the mast channels, rollers, forks, side shift bushing, and all other lifting components of the forklift.

  5. Cab Area Inspection
The cab area will be thoroughly inspected, including the seating, seat belt, bonnet, floor plate, pedals, switches and controls, overhead guard, and mountings.

6. Security Check
Our engineers will check the security of the forklift, including the counterweight, axles and mounting bushes, steering links/bushes, and engine mountings.

7. Wheels and Tires
A close look at the wheels and tires will be conducted, with notes on the tire sizes, wheel nuts, and rims.

8. Lighting and Alarms
All lighting, beacon, switches, alarms, and interlocks will be inspected to ensure they are functioning properly. This includes both safety and security lighting.

9. Functionality Testing
We will test the functionality of all components and systems, including brakes, steering, and overall handling performance.

10. Photographs and Report
Finally, our engineers will take photographs of the forklift from all sides, paying special attention to any damaged areas. A brief description of any work that may be required to bring the forklift into a satisfactory condition will also be included in the report. You will receive your documentation and report of Thorough Examination within 24 hours of the inspection.
